Garam Masala translates literally to "warm spice" in Hindi, the word masala simply means "spices," while garam means "hot." A staple of North Indian cooking, garam masala can be prepared literally thousands of ways and varies from chef to chef. Key spices include cinnamon, cloves, coriander, cumin, nutmeg, cardamom, peppercorns & more.  Our garam masala is toasted and freshly ground, using a traditional Punjabi family recipe. Include to add complex flavor and heat to chicken tikka masala (a British invention), traditional curries, braised vegetables or lentils.

How It's Made: Freshly Ground From 15+ Spices

Our garam masala starts with 15+ whole, high quality spices, transparently sourced from farms and merchants around the world. These spices are then toasted to release essentials oils. We then grind each spice into a powder and blend. Spice blends are made fresh in-house each week, just before shipping direct to your door.

Garam Masala Variations

In North Indian cuisine, garam masala is typically used as a powder, while in southern India, garam masala is made into a paste using coconut milk, vinegar or water. The closer to the equator, the hotter Indian spices tends to be, as chiles thrive in hotter climates, so Southern India garam masala blends tend to be hotter.

Cooking With Garam Masala

Garam masala pairs well with Indian-inspired dishes like chicken tikka masala, curries, braised vegetables or dahls.  Make it easy and rub onto sweet potato wedges or whip up an easy garam masala sauce. Or change it up to add unexpected flavor to desserts like pumpkin pie or chocolate truffles.

Buying Spices in Small Batches

Garam masala should be purchased  in small batches and then stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark spot like your kitchen pantry. We recommend buying in small batches as ground spices will lose their flavor after just a couple months, changing the flavor profile of the blend.
